From day one of Hawke’s birth, Joshua, our four year old, liked to refer to Hawke as “my baby”. Not “my baby brother”. Just “my baby.” He’s moved on to calling him “baby Hawke” now.
One day Joshua came into the living room and asked Meg if he could give “his baby” his fire pop.
“His what?”
“You know. His fire pop.”
“What are you talking about Joshua?”
Then Joshua picked up Hawke’s pacifier. Pass-i-FIRE. And you know, he sucks on it like a lollipop… So to a four year old, that is a fire pop… and that is what we all call it now as though that is what’s printed on the packaging.
How it was shot :: Available light at Jason’s Deli. See the set up here.

Nice! My surprise to find out how the red was made! Great use of bokeh
Zack, this is my first post, so hello my name is Chris. I love the creativity of this shot a lot! Did you use a macro lens for this shot by chance? The colors are amazing too… If you come to New Jersey/Philly give me a shout. I’d love to help you out if you need any logistical assistance during a workshop.
Peace, Chris
Fun pic with an even better story. Love the fire pop.
dude. this rocks. never would’ve thought it was just a couple of cups. goes to prove that there is ALWAYS a picture if we just take the time to see.
Awesome pic and LOVE jason’s deli!
Fabulous. Thanks for providing the set up shot.
Hi Chris,
This was shot with a regular 35mm f2 lens.
Cheers,
Zack
Thanks for the reply Zack. The funny thing is right after I asked that question I realized that you posted the EXIF data. lol Duh! :-) The cups really make the shot look macro or tilt shifty, but in an indescribable way. Your stories are always fun to read and the latest one you just posted about your friend who bailed you out of Kinko’s pergatory was a really nice meaningful one. I’m still sort of mad at FedEx for renaming Kinkos FedEx Office. It just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Wow…would of never guessed if it wasn’t for the setup shot, thanks!
yes, very interesting to see a creatively different thought process in capturing this shot :-)
you don’t miss a thing, do you, Zack? What a cool shot and so fun to see the set up!
wicket. as in sticky. shot through. Did’t make sense why the left side of the fire poop (sorry I though that was what it said the first time I looked) looked soft. kind of extreme PCITW. Nice.
i LOVE me some made up names for things in the family! firepop is AWESOME! we have “bubble-aid” for soda pop and “wiping hands” for napkins.
oh and great shot once again zack. love the “set up shot”
Brilliant!
LOL! Fire pop! My kids named their ‘soothers’ themselves. The eldest’s was called Daydough and our sons was ME. I totally love this post! Thanks Zack.
