Just a little stuck in Ohio today because of the snow coming in. Hope to make it home today. Spent part of the afternoon driving around Columbus shooting images through the windows of my rental car. Subaru’s have pretty decent optics. :)
I have two images I like today. I like the content of this one…. (no smoking)
I prefer the aesthetics of this one… (don’t walk)
Which is your preference?
Cheers,
Zack

I like the composition of the first one and the person’s outfit perplexes me so I find myself staring at that one longer.
don’t walk. definite fave of the two
I would have to say the second one — the composition seems equal parts haphazard and purposeful, and it has a bit more movement than the first.
I definitely like the second more. It’s got depth and feel… and it gets its head out of the crowd. However, the fact that you chopped off the head too low makes me feel a bit strange when i look at it :)

The second. There is something about it, that for me, the second I saw it it just hit me as awesome. Yeah the second.
I like the first one, it has more contrast. The second is funny, because the first thought that came into my mind when seeing it was that the Don’t walk sign will slap the woman’s head. :)
I prefer the simplicity and composition of the second one!
Both are cool…I like 1, cohesive idea…I have to work too hard to put the 2 thoughts together in the second…
First One – I love the sign “No Sale of Cans or 40oz Permitted” too. Number two has style but on this one I go with the content :) Loving the 365 ZacK! Great Stuff!
Love the second one!!!
I can’t decide… The upper one is great, but there’s something about the minimalism of the lower one that screams at me.
I love the 2nd image.
The framing of the second one is way more intriguing… you just sit there staring at it for minutes and each one can think of a different story to accompany this photo…
lol..Subaru optics…I love the feel of the second best. But it has the kind of feel and imagery I gravitate towards – nice and moody. Love the first as well but I see a lot of that here in SW Ohio… :)
OK, I am going to be different; I like the first one. You can look at it 10 times and come up with 10 different stories. Tons to see and imagine. And I like that!
I vote number 2! Love the composition….
In my opinion, the first one. The lowest one doesn’t describe the idea very well.
the second – love the feel. And it would take you ages to get that smudgy subaru window effect in photoshop ;)
I love the second shot! The snow is the subject, but the woman at the bottom gives the snow and the cold context.
I’m going with the first one. The second is nice, but something about the first one is appealing to my eye. =)
no.2 mystery :)
Going to have to go with the first one. Love the entire shot, but the falling snow really sends it over the top.
I’m going to have to say #1. Something about the boarded up window really does it for me.
The first one is just more interesting to me.
….yeah! number 2′ my fav…luv it ! ’cause it’s almost nothing…
Number 1 is better composition wise, but 2 has a nice meaning behind it.
The second one for sure!
PS – #1 is more “accessible.” it’s like Top 40 vs. the Radiohead of #2. different tastes. just saying.
2nd!
#2. The snow looks magical. I don’t know how to do that… one more thing to add to the list of things to learn.
I’m diggin don’t walk 2
Gotta be #1, usually too much ‘stuff’ distracts, but I find myself getting into all that is going on in the pic. Really enjoying 365!
@jay – Thats a great way of putting it!
Cheers,
Zack
#2 — has a cinematic quality to me. This post also reminds me that I haven’t gone out and shot from my car in a while, time to G.O.M.A.
absolutely #2 – i really like how the image is defined by literally marginal objects :)
Love the first one. Love the color of the clothes, the attitude of the person.
LOVE number two!
i have to say “no smoking” because whoever that is rocking those glasses needs their own tv show…
I like the first one.
The second shot bothers me because of the crop. Why cut off her chin? It doesn’t make sense to me why you’d do that. I feel as though it’s a compositional mistake, but perhaps it’s done intentionally to ruffle our feathers a bit…
I definitely like the 2nd one.
Eugene – The only intentional crop to the second photo was cropping it square. I was driving down High Street in Columbus when I saw her standing on the corner. I was drawn to her hair blowing around her facial expression. I held the camera up and fired off a few frames as I was still driving so I was never looking through the viewfinder. The original uncropped image does not include her chin. That is the bottom of the original frame.
Later, in post, I was drawn to this image. Had I put the camera to my face I’m pretty certain I would have not cut her off at the chin but for me this is a happy accident. I like that she is part of the composition that has to be found. She isn’t front and center in the image by focus, crop, or exposure. All that to say, I still don’t have all the words to say as to why I respond to this image.
Cheers,
Zack
Hi Zack, thanks for the explanation/clarification on how the second photo was taken.
My original impression was that even if you were shooting from within the car, you still would have had some an opportunity to determine the crop/framing (it would have been more descriptive/useful if you mentioned that you didn’t capture the image by looking through the viewfinder in the beginning of the entry :) ).
>The original uncropped image does not include her chin.
I see, that makes sense. A happy accident is a result, as you mention.
Thanks for the response, and I’ll see what you come up with for your next 365 photo soon.
The first is certainly more accessible and grabs me immediately with its clarity, bright colors, and scattered dots of flakes. But the longer I look at it – and there’s a lot to see — the more I wonder about what the smoker is thinking and what’s gone inside. The second has the mystery & allure of those accidental street shots – the ones we take when we see the shot but don’t have the opportunity to think it and frame it so we click and hope… I’m fond of the uncomposed aspect of it. We’re reminded that image was basically there with or without you. But you reached out and grabbed it.
second one is classic, mysterious, beautiful.
first one is “cool”
I really like the first one, it’s fun. I love the red coat and glasses, the whole ensemble hah.. I dig the idea with the second one but I really like the composition and content of the first. I’d have to go with the first.
