I really like the first one, it's fun. I love the red coat and glasses, the whole ensemble hah.. I dig the idea with the second one but I really like the composition and content of the first. I'd have to go with the first.

The first is certainly more accessible and grabs me immediately with its clarity, bright colors, and scattered dots of flakes. But the longer I look at it - and there's a lot to see -- the more I wonder about what the smoker is thinking and what's gone inside. The second has the mystery & allure of those accidental street shots - the ones we take when we see the shot but don't have the opportunity to think it and frame it so we click and hope... I'm fond of the uncomposed aspect of it. We're reminded that image was basically there with or without you. But you reached out and grabbed it.

Hi Zack, thanks for the explanation/clarification on how the second photo was taken.

My original impression was that even if you were shooting from within the car, you still would have had some an opportunity to determine the crop/framing (it would have been more descriptive/useful if you mentioned that you didn't capture the image by looking through the viewfinder in the beginning of the entry :) ).

>The original uncropped image does not include her chin.
I see, that makes sense. A happy accident is a result, as you mention.

Thanks for the response, and I'll see what you come up with for your next 365 photo soon.

Eugene - The only intentional crop to the second photo was cropping it square. I was driving down High Street in Columbus when I saw her standing on the corner. I was drawn to her hair blowing around her facial expression. I held the camera up and fired off a few frames as I was still driving so I was never looking through the viewfinder. The original uncropped image does not include her chin. That is the bottom of the original frame.

Later, in post, I was drawn to this image. Had I put the camera to my face I'm pretty certain I would have not cut her off at the chin but for me this is a happy accident. I like that she is part of the composition that has to be found. She isn't front and center in the image by focus, crop, or exposure. All that to say, I still don't have all the words to say as to why I respond to this image.

Cheers,
Zack

I like the first one.

The second shot bothers me because of the crop. Why cut off her chin? It doesn't make sense to me why you'd do that. I feel as though it's a compositional mistake, but perhaps it's done intentionally to ruffle our feathers a bit...
