For my day 52 and 53 my images are gone. Gone. Card went down and the images could not be recovered. That’s the first time I’ve ever had a card go down and could not at least get a majority of the images recovered off of the card. There are plenty of witnesses watching me shoot for my day 52 image. We saw the images on the back of the camera. All was well. I shot my day 52 images at 2am on the 22nd. I used the same card to shoot my day 53 image and then I was going to post them last night… until the card went down. I had an awesome shot of Jason Freidman from B&H too. I’m pretty pissed about it.
So… Not to be without an image on this day I pulled a shot of Angela from the OneLight Workshop that was shot just a few days before. I know. Whatever. Life goes on for my 365.
How it was shot :: Nikon SB 80dx in a 28″ Westcott Apollo softbox. Or was it the 60″ umbrella? It was the umbrella. I had to go back and zoom in on the catchlights of her eyes to see. Big round catch lights don’t come from smaller rectangles. I’m real good at geometry.
A little tip here… See how she seems to be standing normally? Well, I shot this with a wide angle lens from a low shooting position. IF she was standing normally then she would have been distorted by the the wide angle lens from that shooting angle. Her mid section would have looked larger while her face would have looked smaller thus making her look heavier and let me tell you, girls don’t appreciate that kind of angle. So what I done did was… I had Angela lean forward toward the camera. That helps equal out the distortion of the wide angle lens.
Ok, now to make up for day 53…
Cheers,
Zack

Zack…I’m curious as to what brand card it was. I’m still rockin the transcends from your recommendation (or was it Dan’s?) forever ago. Sucks man.
Tim – It was an older Lexar. I’m wondering if it isn’t a physical issue instead of an information issue.
Cards going down.. that is definitely not something you want happenin’ on a regular basis… very nice portrait!
Zack, how do you normally recover your files when cards go down?
I had a card go down and I was told it could not be recovered, but I found a free program online called Recuva. Using this with an AC powered card reader, I recovered everything that seemed to ever have been on that disk…more importantly the recent images from a shoot I had just done. May want to check it out just in case.
Sucks about the card. What a bummer.
I appreciate the tip on the leaning. That’s a useful one to remember!

Oh wow. I just had one of the “duh” moments. I always throw in a close/wide low angle shot or two when photographing someone (skies are usually such uncluttered backgrounds!). But, I generally dislike them when I see them in post. I think you just explained why, and presented the fix.
(I sympathize about your dead-card, I fear God killed it just so I could learn this.)
Thanks!
Hi Zack, im loving following this along with the other sites you have. I wonder if you can help??? how do you get the rollver effect on the images with the text. If you can help please e-mail me at provided.
thanks
Gorgeous.
Hey, I had a card go out on me Saturday. Was it one of your Kingston cards? Those have been giving me fits from day one.
Bummer about the card, thanks for the wide angle tip though.
John – It’s built into this wordpress theme. I don’t have the first idea how to do it myself. I know it’s php, css, or lsd. :)
Click on “autofocus” at the bottom of the page. That’s the theme I’m using for this blog.
Cheers,
Zack
Dead cards suck. There’s a T-shirt for you.
I was at a seminar once when a guy told me that he “Backs up all his important information on compact flash cards because they don’t go bad.” Im pretty sure I exploded his world that day.
The portrait is great.
Thanks Zack, keep on inspiring!!
bummer on the card, and yeah that is a great tip! thank you as always for sharing so graciously!
