I have this love/hate relationship with wind. On the love side of the equation I love how it creates fluid motion in hair and fabric. On the hate side of the equation I can’t tell you how many light modifiers I have lost over the past 6 years since I went pro. Countless umbrellas and no fewer than a dozen softboxes have all met their end by being taken out by the wind. I’ve even lost a flash or two. Well over $1,000 of losses because of wind but dang it all if I still don’t have a love for what it can do. It’s still worth the hassle to fly a box or a brolly in the wind.
How it was shot :: Nikon sb 80DX at 1/4′ish power in a 50″ Westcott Apollo softbox. The softbox was barely kept standing in the wind due to a sand bag and a Dan bag. 25 pounds of sand and 100 something pounds of Dan and the thing was still trying to fall over or blow in on itself. Shot at the second OneLight of GPP.
Cheers,
Zack

you got to get this amazing shot in the second workshop!!!
My luck i guess!
how much can you get a Dan bag for at B&H?
Wow. This frame is gorgeous!
I nearly lost my 50″ and an AB1600 when mine blew over in January. I nearly had a heart attack. We had to use pliers to pull the shaft back out of the mount in the AB.
A Dan bag! Ha!
This is a beautiful photograph. I love the movement and colour.
Fantastic shot mate. I’ve noticed that you switch a bit between your Nikon D3 and the 5D MK II. Do you have a favorite? What determines which body you grab?? Cheers from Oz
Spectacular – well worth the wind risk… :)
Gorgeous photograph. I love how her orange/gold scarf compliments the blue sky. The lighting is like butter as usual. Can’t stop looking at this photo… must get back to work…
It looks like there’s a turtle in the background
