I was aimless driving around town today and saw a man sitting on the corner. I decided I needed to stop and meet him. His name is Junior. He’s 79 and has never been arrested and has never done drugs. I learned those facts in the first 60 seconds of my conversation with him.

Zack

I bet you learned even more about him from looking at his hand; it speaks volumes.
Hey Zack, how do you go about taking photos of strangers? Do you just walk up to them and start up a conversation and then you ask them if you could snap the photo? Did you ever have anyone say no? Just curious…Tx!
Love this. Picture and story.
Honestly… I have no idea how you do it — a white boy driving around ATL popping off at a street corner to introduce yourself and ask to take a photo.
If I did something like that, I’d honestly be afraid of getting shot in some parts around the town I work.
Melinda – Yep. I just walk up and start conversation. If it’s going well I ask to take a photo. I’ve heard “no” many times. And I’ve turned “no” into “well, ok” many times as well. :-)
Love it.I’ve committed myself to adding five new strangers to my 100 Strangers portrait project this weekend. I’m up to 42. Goes in spurts though. It’s pretty great how much you can learn about someone just because you have a camera with you.
The first time I saw the image, I thought of an older person’s hand resting on the hospital bed. Must have been a lot of white background. Does our feeling and experiences determine what we see on the photograph?
Iza – Absolutely it does.
Sorry, Zack, just gotta point out a similar shot/story from one of your buddies:

William – Joe is the man despite the fact that I taught him everything he doesn’t know. :)
Cheers,
