Why A 365?

My name is Zack Arias and I am a photographer based in Atlanta, GA.  For 2010 I am embarking on my own 365 project in order to grow and develop my craft.  I am wanting this year to be a benchmark year in my life as a photographer. I feel as though I have been hitting a glass ceiling for a few years as far as my creativity goes. I preach the importance of shooting, shooting, shooting yet I get so busy in life I forget to practice what I preach. I’m married, we have four kids, and a busy studio to keep going in addition to teaching. If I’m going to grow I have to be creating work. The 365 project model is perfect for this.

The name of this site is A) a precursor to a project I’m thinking of launching in 2011 and B) a big tip of the hat to photographer Dustin Diaz. Dustin’s 365 project is a great source of inspiration showing that dedication and discipline pays off. I met Dustin last year when he had me come out to Twitter HQ to speak about my use of social media in the photography industry. Find him here – @ded. Dustin also helped me figure out a few CSS issues with the blog when I launched it.

Here are my self inflicted rules for my 365 project…

1. I have to create something everyday to post here. That “creation” can be a single photo, a series, a video, or an audio entry.

2. I can not shoot for a day and then hold images back to become fodder for a post later. If I shoot five portraits one day those five portraits can not become five days of blog entries.

3. I’m allowing myself to post a video for the day with footage NOT shot that day if the purpose of my 365 is to work on my editing skill set. So the editing is the 365 for the day.

4. Images from jobs and planned personal projects are allowed to be posted but I must find an image from that day that is only shot for this 365 project and not included in the job or project that was already on the books.

5. iPhone images or video could show up here but I have to be careful to not let them be a crutch. Most likely those will end up here on my travel days if all of my gear is tied up with the TSA.

6. I’m only allowed to miss posting if I have technical issues with a computer or have limited access to Internet.

7. I have to do this because David Hobby says this project is going to own my ass by June. I have to prove him wrong no matter how right he actually is. :)

Thanks for following along!

Cheers,
Zack
