Portrait & Lighting Workshops

I have a new workshop that I will be conducting in Atlanta on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 19th. The workshop will focus on lighting and directing for portraits and will offer a healthy mix of demonstration and participation. There won’t be any time spent on slideshows and lectures. This is a walk-in-the-door-and-get-to-work kind of workshop. I’m setting this up for intermediate to advanced photographers so I ask that you have at least a 51% grasp on the fundamentals of dealing with exposure and camera settings and the like. These are very small workshops so there will be a lot of time for Q&A, working together, experimentation, and shooting. The class size is limited to eight participants.

The workshop will be held at my studio just outside of downtown Atlanta. It will run from 9:30am until 6:30pm. After the workshop everyone is invited to my house for dinner, drinks, and further discussions about photography and life and music and whatever. Lunch will be provided as well. The cost of the workshop is $400 and you can sign up by using one of the buy it now PayPal buttons below.

Atlanta Workshop

Portrait & Lighting Workshop

Typically half or more of my workshop participants travel from out of state to attend one of these. If you are traveling to attend I suggest staying at the downtown Decatur Marriott Courtyard. If you are looking for a more budget friendly hotel that is close try the Super 8 in Decatur. These are closest hotels to the studio.

When you checkout via PayPal please include your email address in the special instructions box. We’ll be in touch with additional information once you have signed up.

One last note… Wear something you wouldn’t mind being photographed in because I’ll be making a portrait of each of you during the course of the workshop. How better to learn how to direct your subjects than by being one yourself? You’re getting a workshop and a new portrait. I know that might freak some of you out and that “freaking out” feeling is exactly why you need to attend this workshop. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Promise.

See you soon!

Awesome! Personally I can’t make either of these dates but please keep me/us informed of future portrait shoots. Would love to come down.

  2. Peter Ort

Crap. I just signed up for the October 11th workshop and accidentally clicked pay now before getting to the special instructions area for my email address. Does it give you the information off my Paypal account? it’s the same email.

    • Zack

      I have your email!

  3. Chad

How much space is left for the 19th

  4. Tommi

Ooooh I wish I’d be around there during that time, I’d definitely come over! I will probably have a work trip to the US (Charlotte, NC actually, so not quite far away, actually…) next March, so I’d just LOVE it if there happened to be a conveniently timed workshop around then and…

…aww forget it, it’s NEVER going to happen with my luck… 🙁

I wish Maine was closer to ATL!!

  6. mal

$400, wow how good is that! If only flights from Sydney to Atlanta were the same.

  7. Kevin

    Dang, all sold out.

  8. Karen Mandall

I’ll keep any eye out for future workshops, I need to head to Georgia to visit family in the next few months (probably spring) and would love to attend a workshop with you while I’m there! Keep me posted!

    • Peter Ort

Haha I did the exact same thing Karen.

      • Peter Ort

hello Zack, when i found out you had a local workshop i bought a ticket for your oct 11th class in such a panic that i forgot to put my email in the comments. i just want to let you know that my email is the same as my paypal account: sep2deuce@yahoo.com. thank you so much for putting on a workshop i can’t wait to meet you in person.

    • Peter Ort

I did the same thing Fred. Zack got mine so you’re probably good to go.

  10. Lou

Dang! I just saw this and both workshops are sold out! Any chance a local can be squeezed in for the Sunday, Oct 19 workshop? Thanks for considering. ~Lou

Arrrggggggghhh! Missed it by this much!

    • Jim Robertson

Oh, if there’s a stand-by list I’d love to be on it. I’m in KY so I’d come right down in a heartbeat! 🙂

a fuji sponsored tour across america featuring 90 minute or so workshops led by its core x-photographers over a day would be wonderful.

i could see a stop at anytown USA featuring courses in portraiture, event photography, commercial photography ended with a discussion/q&a by the presenters with slideshows by each.
and lets throw in a fuji booth with fuji techs cleaning sensors, demoing equipment, and generally trying to get us to part with our money.

    i’d pay to see that.

photoshopworld finished yesterday and through the three days it was pretty much the canikon love fest. with that though, the classes i attended were very good.

that all said, i’d love to attend your workshop – only it falls on the kelby photo walk weekend and i can’t abandon the walk i’m leading – but next time, i may just sign up. if we can’t get a room at a nearby notel, can we camp in your back yard?

  13. Jason

If anyone needs to back out let me know. I’m only two hours away and can make last minute schedule changes.

  14. Richard Wintle

Dang. Only 8 participants per workshop? That is one sweet instructor-to-student ratio!

All of you who were lucky enough to sign up on time – have a great workshop! I am jealous… but in a happy way. 🙂

    • Peter Ort

I know! I’m looking forward to it. Now comes the challenge of figuring out what I’m going to wear. Getting my portrait taken by Zack Arias is not something that happens often. lol

  15. Tim Hays

Please let me know if a spot opens for the 19th. I will be there in a heartbeat! Very sad that I missed this!

  16. Steve Graham

Crap. A day late and a dollar short… Does anyone ever cancel? If you have a waiting list, I would like to be on it.

  17. Kevin

Maybe we can put a deposit on the next offering and have first shot…? (intended)

  18. Dave H

You guys are in for a great time. Lots of learning. It was great to sit with Zack and Meg at their table talking photography and life. Hawke is a blast to sit next to at dinner. 🙂 Great kid.

  19. fred wilson

i still haven’t received any email confirmations besides that i made the payment, i don’t know what to bring or if I’m even in or not but I’m excited!!! this will be the last thing i do before i leave active duty.

    • Zack

It’s coming! I’ve had back to back jobs this week.

  20. Emily Porter

I would love to make the trip for one of these if you do more in November! I took your OneLight workshop in July of 2009 and it changed my life (not hyperbole- it really did). After that summer, I taught my then-boyfriend (now husband/business partner) how to shoot and now we work as a team and I would LOVE for him to experience one of your workshops!!! And, hell, I’d want to be there too. Is there a mailing list I can get on for future workshop announcements?

  21. Jeff Weeks

To echo what others have said, if you decide to do this again, say outside of peak New England fall foliage/wedding/senior/family portrait season, I will be in Decatur before your coffee gets cold.

  22. Keith Castillo

Would love to attend one of these one day! Love this website!!

  23. J Cortes

Please let us know of any future workshops. By the way you should consider holding a workshop here in the panhandle of Florida.

  24. Bill Evans

Zack, I don’t know if you are keeping a list, but here is one West Virginian that would really like to attend one of your workshops. I imagine they fill almost immediately but if you have a list, I have driven to Atlanta before so I have the route memorized and I’m ready when you are.
